My mom, dad, three sisters and I lived in a two-story farmhouse. Large oak and pine trees surrounded our house on the hill. It was the typical family farm, complete with two old tractors, an assortment of livestock and a very large Boxer named Smokie.

Smokie roamed the farm freely. It was like he considered it his “job” to alert mother about the large but harmless garden snakes. I am told he had a passion for keeping raccoons and possums out of our yard. With no formal “training” Smokie was instinctively protective of our family. Daily he escorted dad around the premises and put the other animals in their place with his big bark.

There is a family story about one day when mom went into the house to “catch” the phone, leaving the four of us on the front steps. The oldest at that time would be about five and a half.

As the screen door slammed, a car came over the hill and pulled into our driveway. A man stepped out of the car and started towards us. My oldest sister started down the steps towards the stranger, but Smokie blocked her. Another sister also started towards the vehicle. Smokie would not have it. He picked her up by her shirt and drug her back to her place and stood between “his family” and the stranger growling.

The stranger was getting back in his car when my mother came out. He never got out of the car again. That night, my dad had a good laugh at the new game wardens introduction to our family and Smokie.

Even though we weren’t in danger that day Smokie was still there to protect his family.

Smokie continued to be our “PIP” Protecting our Home and Our family for many years to come.
